Morton Stadium in Santry was the venue for the National Senior Track & Field Championships on Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th July. It was the first major athletics event since the stadium and its facilities came under the management and control of NSCDA (Operations) Ltd.
By general acclaim, the overall event was a great success for Athletics Ireland. The new MONDO FTX Track came in for particularly favourable comments from many of the 400 athletes and their coaches. This surface is the first of its kind in Ireland and is identical to the track being laid in London for the Olympics in 2012. This is a further boost for Irish athletes who are aspiring to compete at the highest international level.
The women’s 200m was a cracker between Niamh Whelan and Kelly Proper. Whelan crossing the line in front of Proper who was closing all the way. Both were given the same time of 23.68.
